Kirk A. Fields has over fifteen years of experience in the field of mechanical testing. Since 1989, Mr. Fields has worked as supervisor and manager of the Mechanical Testing Lab at the University of California at Santa Barbara, providing fixture and system design support to PhD and post-doctoral researchers. The Mechanical Test Lab services the entire College of Engineering with facilities to perform material and component testing and research. Research thrusts include high performance composites (ceramic, metal, polymer), nuclear pressure vessel irradiation damage, micromechanical fracture analysis. Mr. Fields also serves as a lecturer in engineering experimentation and design for UCSB's junior and senior design sequence and as an advisor for junior and senior design projects.
Prior to working at UCSB, Mr. Fields worked at Kahr Bearing Co./Dover Industries, as a supervisor and manager of the mechanical and chemical testing laboratories. At Kahr, his duties included test procedure development, quality control documents and procedures, test fixture design as well as new product development. Prior to that he worked as a test engineer at Parker Hannifin Corporation/R&D Group, performing mechanical and chemical design and evaluation of aerospace sealing components, including test apparatus and procedures.
Mr. Fields earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Utah in 1984 and is currently working toward his Master of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering at UCSB.
