You have probably heard the question “Are you ISO certified?” from some of your customers. What is ISO 9000?
The first definition is to “"do what you say you do and document it.”
However it is essential that you ensure that you really do what you say you do. In addition, certain specific requirements have to be met.
ISO 9000 is more than just a global standard, it reflects a well-organized operation producing a quality product by trained and motivated personnel. It is the foundation of running a business well. It provides your customer with a degree of comfort and confidence about your ability to deliver a quality product as promised. Additionally, it provides your organization the opportunity to reduce costs and provide your personnel with job satisfaction.
A management supported ISO 9000 program incorporating TQM (Total Quality Management) techniques will result in continuous improvement driven by quality teams.
The cost of implementing ISO 9000 compliance depends on the existing conditions of the organization. From actual studies of organizations that have implemented ISO 9000 and reaped its benefits, it appears that the value to business outweighs the implementation cost with a return on investment of less than twelve months.
Many ISO 9000 programs are designed around twenty aspects of a quality program that are subject to rigorous audit including training.
All employees who affect product quality require appropriate training. Each organization shall identify training needs and establishes and maintain documented training procedures. Personnel who perform these functions should be qualified based on experience, education and training and in most cases be employees of the organization. Outside Specialists will be required to train in those areas where the internal experts are too busy on their own tasks or where no internal expertise exists.
TTi assists organizations in providing continual education training for engineering and test personnel. Our programs are designed to provide participants a multi year program to improve the skills required to produce a quality product.
Calibration, Measurement and Test Equipment
All final test, calibration and other test equipment such as fixtures, templates, jigs and software which are defined in the ISO 9000 quality plan must be controlled with proper maintenance and review procedures.
Employees must be trained in the use and correct application of the equipment which must be capable of measuring to the level of accuracy specified in the test requirements.
Technical test data on the inspection equipment must be retained and made available to customers who may want to check the functional adequacy by conducting their own studies.
Process inspection used to validate requirements within the process must be made part of the calibration control scheme.
When calibration devices are brought in (rented) from outside organizations, who calibrate them, a documentation file shall be established and the outside organizations certification traceable back to a national standard will be maintained.
In the event that a specific instrument is not required to meet the ISO 9000 criteria, it may be exempt, by identifying it as such. However specifying calibration control only for final test equipment may result in third party ISO 9000 auditors issuing a non conformance in the corrective action process.
TTi's Metrology Specialist Program will be of benefit to ensure that the correct procedures and techniques are followed.
The following classes are presented on a regular basis. See our current schedule for dates.
