Question and Answers

Question  Why attend a TTi 3 day course when there are evening courses available at local colleges?

Answer  A three day twenty one hour course provides a total immersion in the subject matter that one does not obtain in a semester long course presentation at a local college.

TTi instructors have actual hands on industrial experience and the subject matter is presented from a practical application mode, with some basic theory as appropriate.

The college courses, on the other hand, are generally presented from a theoretical point of view, by professors who generally have little recent industrial experience.

Students attending the semester-long courses may lose interest or miss classes during the term.

TTi classes are highly interactive. It's not the usual "throw the material at the students and hope some of it sticks" approach. TTi instructors take time to assist individual students with specific problems as may be necessary for them to understand the material.

TTi courses are generally developed because the subject matter is not available at local colleges. A great effort is made to select the course content that is appropriate for the subject matter and to meet the time restraints. TTi courses are continually being reviewed and revised from input received from participants.

Sending an employee to a TTi class shows in a positive way that the organization and you the manager, care enough that you are willing to allow the individual the opportunity to improve or acquire new skills.

The return on this investment should be a more satisfied employee, better equipped to help produce an improved quality product.

Question  Why use outside "experts" to teach our employees, while we have in-house experts available?

Answer  Being a good instructor requires more than just understanding the technical material. It requires the ability to present the material in a way that the participants can follow and understand. For example, some individuals with Ph.D. degrees and first-class experience and technical ability are not necessarily good instructors.

It takes an good deal of time to put together the information and develop the course workbook.

It removes a valuable in-house expert from other vital work.

An outside instructor can bring give attendees a new perspective on the subject matter.

Question  Why proceed with a multi year-training program? Won't one or two courses every now and then be sufficient?

Answers  TTi has developed its multi-year continuing education program in order to provide the participants with a structured program of continuing education in specific application oriented subjects.

It has been seen over the past number of years that a sequence of classes leading to a certificate provides the incentive for individuals to continue to make the effort, to obtain technical expertise and learn practical methodologies related to their everyday work activities.

It can be time-consuming for managers to evaluate various course offerings that employees request permission to attend.

Question  Is the individual going to class just to "goof off"?

Answer  Not in the vast majority of cases. Participating in a TTi class requires a great amount of effort on the part of the attendees. They are not used to sitting for three days at a stretch having to really concentrate and absorb highly technical material. They also have to be prepared to participate in technical interaction on the subject matter. Management should exercise caution in selecting candidates for training. Some of the criteria that could be applied are work effort/aTTitude and enthusiasm for new challenges.
