Why get involved?

Management has many responsibilities in running a successful organization. They are just as busy as everyone else. Activities are usually delegated to individuals who have proven that they have the ability to get things done. The organization's end-product needs to be of a given quality and to this end, the current philosophy is to implement the Quality Program known as ISO 9000. The thrust of this program is to document all procedures, so that everyone involved in production is following the same "sheet of music" and that all stages of product development and production follow the planned procedure. The experiences of the creators of the ISO 9000 concept dictated that appropriate training was essential to producing a quality product. This is a requirement of all ISO 9000 programs.

Consider the following premise:

A motivated, well-trained Design, Test and Production team will make the difference in assisting management deliver a quality product within schedule and budget.

It requires a great effort by a large number of people in order that your organization's products can be shipped to your customers:

at the required quality level,
within the required time schedule,
within the budget constraints.

Many groups within organizations give very little thought to acquiring or providing training to their staff. They are so busy getting on with their everyday activities that training doesn't even make the "to do" list.

When someone does bring up the concept of training, the following comments are often heard.

My staff are doing OK, they are experienced, why do they need additional training?
There's not enough money in the budget for training.
I can't afford to have the cost charged to my department.
With my schedule, I can't afford to have any of my staff off the job for three days.
I can't have all my staff out training at the same time.

However it is up to the group manager to:

Accept the premise that training is beneficial for your group and for the whole organization.
Make the effort to obtain the funding from management to implement training.
Make the effort to release the personnel for the training.
Find a source of training that will produce results in a reasonable time frame and that can be translated into near-term improvements in the design, test and production phases of the product.

In other words it is up to you, the group manager, to make it happen.
